I have met and worked with many people who would self describe themselves as “a leader” and then suddenly find themselves hitting the same corporate wall when being considered for leadership roles receiving the feedback that is counter to their perspective. In fact one business friend was told rather harshly, “if you want a leadership role you need to first learn how to be a leader”. Needless to say that was a startling message that rocked their reality.
Most people don’t think of leadership as set of skills, they think of it as ideas. Leadership is a set of skills, and that’s good news! It means that anyone can decide to learn leadership skills and action them, if they are willing to go through the process of learning. While supervisors might be more gentle with their remarks, they are accurate to say that a decision must be made to learn these skills, and then they should direct the individual to actually learn them!
Deepak Chopra published a series of blogs around Leadership. He defined the skills via seven headings around the letters. Let’s look at the first part of the word L-E-A-D: L= Listening, E= Emotional Based Leading, A=Actioning Quickly and Easily, D=Deciding and Doing. I will address this over several articles.
Right now I will jump to ‘Action’. Leaders listen deeply to those around them with open body language, seek out expert advice, decide, and then action that decision. Often these decisions and actions need to be made within minutes or hours in order to take advantage of an opportunity. It is called a Risk-Reward assessment. It is an essential skill for all leaders regardless of field. The longer you take to make a decision, the less effectively you are able to lead.
I will give you four questions to ask yourself:
- What will happen if I do this?
- What won’t happen if I do this?
- What wouldn’t happen if I did this?
- What wouldn’t happen if I didn’t do this?
The last two questions are quantum linguistics, so you will have to repeat them several times to get an answer as your conscious mind alone, can’t answer them.
